Culture of Cleanliness is recruiting our founding Board of Directors. This is not a ceremonial role. The founding board will shape the bylaws, set the governance culture, approve the strategic plan, and establish the relationships that determine what this organization becomes.

Who We Are

A coalition that became an organization.

Culture of Cleanliness was founded in 2022 out of an EPA Gulf of Mexico Division Grant Coalition formed by Groundwork New Orleans, Water Wise Gulf South, Healthy Community Services, Bunny Friend Neighborhood Association, Greater Treme Consortium, and Everything Business Social Culture. The coalition operated as a Stormwater Management Campaign in Treme, the Upper 9th Ward, and the 7th Ward.

At the conclusion of that campaign, Gregory N. Swafford, B.A. co-founded Culture of Cleanliness with formal 501(c)(3) status and pivoted the organization to confront the environmental justice issues plaguing New Orleans East. Today we organize community-led environmental stewardship in New Orleans — building a culture where cleanliness is a normalized behavior beginning with the government and ending with the people.

Open Seats

We are seeking three to five founding board members.

You do not need to fit a seat exactly. We are looking for thoughtful, committed people who believe in our mission and bring complementary skills to the table.

Seat 01

Legal & Governance

Attorney, paralegal, or someone with nonprofit governance experience. Helps review contracts, bylaws, grant agreements, and ensures legal compliance.

Seat 02

Finance & Treasury

Accountant, bookkeeper, or business owner with budget oversight experience. Reviews financials and chairs the audit and finance function.

Seat 03

Community & Mission

Trusted community leader, faith leader, organizer, or resident who can speak to the communities Culture of Cleanliness serves. Grounds the board in mission.

Seat 04

Fundraising & Development

Foundation relations background, donor network, or grant writing experience. Helps strengthen organizational fundraising capacity over time.

Seat 05

Programs & Environment

Environmental science, public health, or program evaluation background. Brings technical depth to programmatic decisions and impact measurement.
